About Me

Hi, my name is Matthew!

I'm 8 years old and I love watching the stars and reading books.

I've had a moderately severe allergy to fish and shellfish ever since I was young.

My allergy can make me feel sick, have headaches and give me hives depending on how much I eat.
I have to be careful of what I eat so that I don’t eat anything that contains fish or shellfish.
I also have to stay away from people cooking shellfish because it can release proteins into the air that can make me sick.

About My Allegy

My allergy is a moderately severe allergy to fish and shellfish.
Finned fish and shellfish do not come from related families of foods, so being allergic to one does not necessarily mean that you must avoid both.

Fish allergies and shellfish allergies can range from being mildly severe to anaphylactic and symptoms can range from hives (a bumpy red rash), nausea or stomach pain, a blocked or runny nose, headaches, asthma symptoms and anaphylaxis symptoms.

Dealing With My Allergy

Every day I have to be careful of my allergy and stay alert.
I try to avoid seafood restaurants and Japanese cooking and sushi.

Whenever my parents buy food I need to check the label so I don't get sick and make sure that the food doesn’t have any fish in it. I'm okay with most food though but it's still good to check, you should especially check if you have a severe allergy. I also check cosmetics because sometimes makeup and perfume can have seafood products in them.

If I think a restaurant uses seafood a lot in the kitchen I always need to ask for them to make sure what I'm eating doesn't get touched by the seafood.

Some foods that may have seafood in them are things like these:

Caviar and fish roe (fish eggs)
Artificial fish like surimi, an imitation crabmeat, sometimes used in sushi
Fish sauce, oils, and gelatin
Caesar salad and Caesar dressing
